Good sized car park at the end of a steep and windy, narrow bumpy road.
Is hilly but nothing too steep, certainly one of the more level south downs way walks by comparison. Most of the walk is on stone chip paths, there are some field walks and narrower sections if you venture off the main paths.

Whilst all south down way walks benefit from the stunning views as you'll see here, it is nice to be able to join the route pretty much at the top which is such a convenient factor here at Kithurst Hill.
From the car park you can go left or right along the South Downs way route, or straight ahead through the fields. It's great to explore alternative routes and today I went right. As you walk through the small woodland you come to a fork, I kept to the right here and doing this means on your right for the next kilometre or so you have fantastic views to the north. Shortly after the fork there is a gate on your right which you can go through, and you can walk in the pretty green pastures adjacent to the path for a good distance - you can get back on the path further along too without having to come back to the first gate. If you do this however you will need to keep your dog on the lead as per the signs, and there are commonly animals grazing here which is why.
So I kept to the paths today as wanted Hank to have a bit more freedom to run. It can be quite busy with other walkers and cyclists too though so I didn't let him run too far from me and had to put him back on the lead for some of the duration.
I managed to create a small loop by heading left at the next signed junction, and then left again when I met the next signpost and this route leads you back to the fork you passed earlier and back to the car. This route is a bit narrower, and you'll get equally beautiful views this time over to the coast and I was lucky it was a clear day you can see for miles. Whilst it is a little narrower and overgrown in sections going this way it's such a pleasant walk, and as you come through the fields with tall grass blowing in the wind it made me think to look for a rock that had no earthly business being there that Andy Dufresne may have left something under!
