Along this stretch of the A29 there are several lay-bys on both sides of the road. I used a small one just after the Public Footpath sign.
Immediately from the car you need to go up a large, steep hill with some steps for part of it. Once up the hill it levels out and it's generally very flat - mix of woodland paths and wide agricultural tracks.
No water here
No bins here
Coming from Bury hill direction, if you use the lay-by after where I parked you can walk along Fairmile Bottom, where there is also a small picnic area.
The initial hill here is quite an effort even with the section that has steps. Once at the top there is a network of paths to take and you could easily have a longer walk than I had if you wanted. I took a right and followed the woodland paths until we got to the main forestry tracks which took us left into the woods, and then shortly after another left turn takes you back to the top of the hill where we started.
The area is heavily used for forestry work as the numerous piles of logs and replanted trees is evidence of so worth being aware of. We didn't see any people or vehicles at all though on our walk, so whilst by the time you get on to the main, very long and very straight tracks it can become a bit mundane there are lots of open spaces and it's very quiet so Hank enjoyed a lot of off-lead freedom.
